Our Team Approach
Our teammates are central to our work at Cousins, and they are also at the heart of our sustainability efforts. Achieving satisfaction at work for our associates is an important goal for us. Therefore, we design work to allow for substantial teammate engagement, we communicate extensively, and we provide a range of training and development opportunities.
Over 90% of our teammates provided feedback about our workplace through an engagement survey we conducted in 2014. We were gratified to receive very high ratings in the categories related to trust with co-workers, trust in senior leadership, and health and wellness participation. We are particularly proud of the high marks with respect to trust, because this speaks volumes about the dedication of our talented team during our transformative high-activity periods of recent years.
For several years, our CEO has participated in regular meetings with the Leadership Council, a group of our young leaders who represent a cross-section of disciplines within the company. Each Leadership Council group meets over the course of a year and works on special projects of importance to the company, including, most recently, working with Human Resources to ensure we recruit, retain, and develop individuals who share our commitment to high quality performance and ethical approaches to all our business. We have also convened smaller employee focus groups that are further exploring issues of concern to our employees and providing valuable feedback that is helping to shape our future initiatives.
Employee wellness has also long been a priority for our company. For many years we have offered insurance premium discounts to those employees who participate in biometric screenings; more importantly, these screenings have uncovered previously unsuspected conditions, enabling the affected employees to seek appropriate medical care promptly. In 2014 we expanded our wellness activities by launching our “Step Ahead” challenge. More than 75% of our employees elected to participate in a month-long challenge, with each receiving a FitBit activity tracker and the opportunity to receive generous gift cards as a reward for meeting certain activity thresholds. The excitement created by this challenge was palpable, and we look forward to future initiatives that inspire wellness among our colleagues.
